No one remembered the last time they’d seen a sky without satellites tracing their quiet arcs, no contrails to stitch city to city. The first ones to call this place a paradise were the ones who had nowhere left to return to: refugees of systems that had outlived their usefulness, workers laid off by automation that learned faster than grief, scavengers who had grown tired of picking old world bones.
