Through an analysis of distinct historical phases—from the mythological and adaptation era of the mid-20th century, through the golden age of realism in the 1980s, to the contemporary ‘New Generation’ wave—this paper explores how the cinema negotiates key cultural signifiers: the matrilineal past (tharavadu), political radicalism (communism), religious plurality, the paradox of high literacy and social conservatism, and the globalized Malayali diaspora.
