This paper explores the concept of “studio gumption” – a blend of perseverance, craftsmanship, and self-directed problem-solving – within the context of independent media studios in Vietnam. Drawing on the phrase “chúng tôi chân thành” (we sincerely) and the notion of “free” (as in libre, gratis, or emotionally unburdened), the paper argues that sustainable creative work requires more than technical skill: it demands moral and emotional sincerity. Through case examples of small Vietnamese animation and video production studios, the paper shows how “free” can mean freedom from exploitative labor practices, free access to tools, or freely given authentic expression.
